From June 3rd until the 7th, Study Options will be hosting a series of university Open Days around the UK. These once-a-year events give you the best opportunity to talk to 20 representatives from the top universities in Australia and New Zealand about studying at their institutions, without actually having to visit! You can find out more about the courses available, the universities themselves, their accommodation options, campus lifestyles and facilities, and more.

So, why are we at Intern Options letting you know about this? Well, from our experience many of the interns who do go off to Australia love it so much that they are hankering after an opportunity to return. Whether you have never previously been to university, or are looking to return to study, you will find that universities in Australia and New Zealand offer a huge range of undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications that may interest you. In some subjects and specialisms, you will find nowhere better in the world. Imagine working towards your marine studies degree whilst diving on the Great Barrier Reef, or qualifying as a vet whilst studying koalas and kangaroos? The opportunities are endless, so why not spend an afternoon finding out a little bit more about it?

Study Options Open Days are a series of free information events designed to give students, parents and careers advisors the chance to find out more about studying at Australian and New Zealand universities. They will be held in Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and London during the first week of June. For exact dates, times and venues, make sure you check out the Open Days website at www.studyoptionsopendays.com. You can turn up at your nearest event any time during the afternoon and stay for as long as you need. Members of the Study Options team will be available throughout the Open Days to answer your questions. There will also be a student visa advice desk and an applications desk for those who wish to apply on the day.

Study Options is a free, independent, expert service for people looking to study in Australia and New Zealand. Study Options is the official representative of Australian and New Zealand universities and colleges in the UK and Ireland, and help to make sure that the application process is as straightforward and stress-free as possible for you. Study Options is the only organisation in the UK that focuses solely on Australian and New Zealand education, and offers help with every stage of the process. You can find out more about Study Options on their website and in this article that previously appeared on Intern Options.

If you have any questions about the Study Options Open Days, or would like to speak to an advisor about different course options, please contact Study Options via their enquiry form, or call 020 7353 7200.

If you’re based in Melbourne for any length of time, there is plenty to keep you entertained within the city during your stay (more on that soon!), but there is also so much to see if you have time to head out into the surrounding area, including the world famous Great Ocean Road.

Great Ocean Road

The 12 Apostles – Tourism Australia Copyright

The Great Ocean Road is a stretch of highway that runs all the way along the coastal region of south-west Victoria. It is about 247km long. Following the coast all the way, you will see some of the most spectacular coastal scenery including rugged cliffs, sandy coves, special rock formations and even a quaint fishing village.

The highlight is the Twelve Apostles, a group of limestone stacks rising impressively out of the Southern Ocean. Currently there are 7 apostles still standing, but the sights are no less jaw-dropping. Aim to arrive there for a sunset (or sunrise if you’re an early bird!) if you want to take home some truly amazing photos.

The Great Ocean Road can in fact be driven in 1 day from end to end, but that would be crazy! Give yourself at least 2/3 days to drive to the end and back, making sure you have plenty of stops along the way – there are hotels and campsites for accommodation. Hiring a vehicle is easily done from Melbourne, although there are also backpacker tours of various lengths available if you don’t drive. Adelaide is not technically the end of the Great Ocean Road – it’s a lot further on, but it is usually possible with the larger car hire companies to pick up your vehicle from one city and drop it off at the next, if you would like to make you Great Ocean Road experience part of a longer holiday.

Phillip Island

Phillip Island is situated in Western Port Bay, to the South of Melbourne and East of the Mornington Peninsula. Named after Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of New South Wales, this little island is visited by 3.5 million people annually.

Packed with wildlife, the key draw for tourists is at Summerland Beach, where you can see fairy penguins waddling ashore as dusk falls, although there are also plenty of koalas and waterbirds to be seen in the area.

The island’s location lends itself to perfect surf conditions, and hosts a number of different surf events and competitions. If you like a bit more speed and noise than the usual relaxed pace of the island, then this is also the place to come for the Motor Bike Grand Prix, each year.

Yarra Valley

Transport yourself to a different world in the lush and peaceful Yarra valley, just an hours drive out of Melbourne. Stretching up into the Dandenong mountains, the Yarra Valley is a fertile region full of vineyards. The produce from the 40 wineries in this region are well known globally as Australia’s finest Pinot Noir and sparkling white wines. Throughout the Yarra, there are also many restaurants serving local and international food, cafes as well as luxurious accommodation to help you escape the busy city and relax.

Of course, we know that on an intern’s budget, drinking the wine may not be the only thing on your mind in the Yarra Valley, if you are looking for fruit picking work during your working holiday, then this could also be a place to seek work. The grape picking season in the Yarra runs through February and March, although of course it is extremely popular with backpackers, so make sure you get in early if you want to take part.

Bells Beach

Bells beach is a renowned surf beach which is located 100 km south-west of Melbourne. There is not really much “beach”, there is however a beautiful rocky cliff and the nearby small town called Torquay which is home to two of the most popular surf brands Rip Curl and Quiksilver.

Bells Beach hosts one of the world’s longest running surfing competitions, the Rip Curl Pro Surf & Music Festival.

Dandenong Ranges

The Dandenong Range, is a low mountain range of rolling hills covered in lush temperate forest. The Dandenongs are located where Melbourne’s eastern suburbs meet the mountains and forests, less than an hour from the city. Protected parklands preserve the natural beauty of this area, which is a bushwalking and cycling paradise. Climbing to the peak of Mount Dandenong (633 metres), will give you a panoramic view of the city.

It won’t feel like it, but the area is home to 100,000 residents, being so close to the city, and there are plenty of restaurants, shops and B&Bs if you want to take a longer trip to the Dandenong. Head back to your Melbourne home via the Yarra Valley, which we mentioned above.

Brisbane is the capital and most populated city in the Australian state of Queensland and the third most populated city in Australia. It is just as an exciting a place to do your internship as Melbourne and Sydney, with plenty going on around town. Besides that, you will be in the hub of the beautiful state of Queensland, a great jumping off point for holiday weekends to the fabulous white sand beaches of the Gold Coast and Fraser Island. Or head even further North into tropical Queensland for access to the Great Barrier Reef on the Whitsunday Islands or from Cairns… But what about living in the CBD? For those weekends when you don’t want to travel, or even a bit of post-work relaxation, here’s our top 5 things to do in Brisbane.

South Bank Parklands in Brisbane (Image linked from the South Bank website)

South Bank Parklands

Relax a little after work in the South Bank Parklands. An idyllic space, and so close to the CBD, take a book and chill for a while or meet up with mates for some dinner at one of the many restaurants or BBQ spots! The South Bank area is filled with restaurants, cafes, a lagoon, a beautiful beach, playgrounds, gardens and walkways or barbecue and picnic areas to enjoy your day. Visit the website for more information.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane is a wonderful place to visit. It’s one of the few Australian zoos which enables you to feed and touch the animals. The wildlife zoo contains koalas, kangaroos, Australian birds, Tasmanian devils, wombats, dingoes, reptiles and small farm animals. You can feed the kangaroos any time of the day with food which you buy from the local café. You can cuddle a koala or a python if you wish and watch live shows about the various animals during the daily program, which are very educational and amusing to watch. If you’re visiting Brisbane then it’s well worth the effort to visit Lone Pine. Buses run daily from the city to Lone Pine and it’s opened daily from 8:30 til 5:00. For more information about visiting the sanctuary, check out the website here.

Suncorp Stadium

Suncorp Stadium is Queensland’s premier sports and outdoor concert venue. It is a 52,500 seat, state-of-the art, world-class stadium hosting national and international Rugby League, Rugby Union, soccer and concerts. For the latest events, have a look at Suncorp Stadium website here.

Eagle Street Pier at night (Image linked from the Eagle Street Pier website)

Eagle Street Pier

Running right along the river’s edge, the Eagle Street Pier area boasts “the best views in Brisbane” and overlooks the Story Bridge. It’s packed with restaurants and cafes to choose from, although some of them are a bit high end! If you want to enjoy the views but save some dollars, try the more affordable dining experiences like Coffee Club and Grill’d or a few German beers at The Bavarian Bier Cage. If you want to arrive in style up the river, then the precinct is serviced by City Cat and River Ferries. Have a look at their website here for some mouthwatering pictures and news of other event going on at the precinct.

Ann Street

The first street if you get off the Airtrain from the airport is Ann Street. The main thoroughfare in the CBD, it’s a great landmark to reorientate yourself when wandering in the city. Ann Street is home to the State Law Building, Central Railway Station, Brisbane City Hall, King George Square, King George Central, and also ANZAC Square and the Shrine of Remembrance. But you will also find many interesting boutique shops, restaurants and parks scattered along the street. You could try lunch at a new one each day during your internship!

It’s not every day you get to fly to the other side of the world, let alone be able to live and work there for the entire duration of your internship, so make the most of it while you can. There are loads of things to see in Australia, and whether you have a spare 3 weeks, or 3 months, there’s plenty to fill your time with.

All of our interns travel on a Working Holiday Visa that is valid for 1 year; despite the name, you don’t have to work the whole time you are in Australia, we would definitely recommend you have a bit of a holiday too before your hugely successful new career takes off!

Here’s a few ideas for things you could do…

Go driving! – A very popular option with backpackers, travelling by road is a great way to experience Australia. If you go in a campervan you can travel even further, and have the flexibility to stay almost anywhere you like (within reason and local by-laws of course!) Even on a short trip you will discover hidden gems – empty beaches, unusual fauna and friendly locals. It’s even more fun in a group, so see if you can arrange a trip with a few of the other interns. There are plenty of companies hiring out campervans, or if you are there for a long while and travelling with a group, it might be worth buying one.

Dive in to some World Heritage – The Great Barrier Reef, is the World’s largest coral reef, with over 1,500 different fish species. Head up to Cairns in Northern Queensland and there are dive schools aplenty, so why not spend some time learning a new skill as well as meeting some fish face to face?

Get out and up – Strap your boots on and head out to one of Australia’s great mountain ranges for some trekking and/or skiing (“What?! No way?!” …well we say “YES, skiing…” read on). The most accessible ranges are the Flinder’s range in South Australia, the Blue Mountains in New South Wales and the Australian Alps which spans New South Wales, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory, and which has skiable terrain during June to September. If you don’t believe us, have a look at the pictures here!

Head to the hot, hot centre – Uluru is another World Heritage site, and one of the most famous sights in Australia, and it should not be missed. But it’s a long old trip, this is about the furthest you can get from the coast in Australia, the best way to get there is to fly or travel on “The Ghan” train which runs from Darwin all the way through to Adelaide.

Go West – Travellers are up and down the East Coast like yo-yos throughout the year, but you can discover a different side of Australia (literally) by taking a flight over to the West. Western Australia has plenty to offer: amazing beaches, vineyards, outback, the Ningaloo Reef, the Bungle Bungle Range of mountains, as well as the metropolitan hubs of Perth and Fremantle.

We won’t go on, it’d take too long to cover everything, suffice to say there is plenty of amazing stuff to see. If you haven’t already got enough to do, have a look at the Tourism Australia website for lots more information and itineraries that would suit any length of trip.

Have you thought about continuing your study or just continuing your Australian experience?

Did you know you could apply to study in Australia? Whether you are looking to continue your university study through to postgraduate level, or just looking for a change of scene and experience, there are many ways in which you could benefit from choosing to spend a period studying in Australia.

You could:

Study in the sunshine! If you haven’t done any further education yet, why not have a bit of a different study experience and go Down Under

Transfer credit from a degree you have already started in the UK

Move on to do a postgraduate qualification in a range of subjects, including PGCE, Masters degrees or even PhD’s.

Go for a complete change! If you’re looking for a new career, you could re-qualify in one of a wide range of vocational subjects.

But I’ve already used my working holiday visa for Australia…

Doesn’t matter! The fact that you’ve had a working holiday has no impact on your student visa application; the two schemes are completely separate. In contrast to the working holiday visa scheme, there are also no age restrictions on student visas. However you do have to have a confirmed offer of a place at an Australian university or college, and it must be for a full-time study course. International students are not eligible for part-time courses or apprenticeships in Australia.

I’m looking for a change of scene, can I study New Zealand?

Plenty of study options there too! The further education in both countries is very similar to that in the UK, so everything you can do in Australia, you can also do in New Zealand.

So how do I find out more about studying in Australia or New Zealand?

Study Options is a free, expert, independent service for anyone looking to study in Australia and New Zealand. We are the official representative of Australian and New Zealand universities and colleges in the UK and Ireland, and are here to ensure the process of applying to those institutions is as stress-free and straightforward as possible for you. Study Options is the only organisation in the UK that focuses exclusively on Australian and New Zealand education. Hundreds of UK students apply to Australian and New Zealand institutions through Study Options every year.

So, what can Study Options do to help?

Free information and advice – Providing information on what courses are available and which might suit you best is a key part of what we do. We do the work for you, so rather than spend hours Googling, why not just get in touch with us (either by phone on 020 7353 7200, or by filling in our email enquiry form) and let us know what you are interested in studying.

Putting you in touch with the universities and colleges – Study Options is the official UK representative for institutions across Australia and New Zealand, and so we are the first to let you know when their staff are coming to visit. We host opportunities throughout the year to talk to their staff face-to-face, on the phone or through web chats. We will also bring them to a city near you with our College Roadshow and Open Days events.

Sorting out the paperwork – Make sure you fill in all the right forms, we will send all the information and forms you need to make a successful application to your chosen institution, and check everything for you before it’s posted, so there’s no chance you’ll forget something important.

Making an application – As an official representative we can certify all your important documents that need to be included in your application, and return the originals to you by recorded delivery, so you don’t need to worry about your academic certificates getting lost halfway around the world! Like everything else we do, this is a free service.

Getting an answer – As soon as we have your application, we will submit it to your chosen institution immediately via email or using their admissions systems online. This ensures your application will be in on time. Applications send by our office are then fast-tracked through the admissions process, so you’ll get a response more quickly than if you applied directly.

The Practicalities – Applying through Study Options reduces the risk of being rejected because of a mistake on your application form, or a query on your academic background. If the admissions teams require more information or need to question something, they will contact us for clarification, so you’ll get a chance to explain whatever the issue is. If you have an issue further down the line – a last-minute change of heart about your course choice, or when you want to start, for example – we will liaise with the university or college for you, to sort it out.

Basically, we provide you with help at each step of the process…

From deciding where to apply and making applications to accepting a place, couriering important documents over to Australia or New Zealand, help with applying for a student visa, sorting out accommodation and setting up a bank account before you leave, we’re always here to help. If you have any questions, at any point, just call or email one of the team.

So, if you’re reading this, you’re probably already tempted by the idea of an internship in Australia, and probably you’re wondering what happens next after you apply… Well here we are, the 7 steps until your touch down in Australia…

Step 1 – Enquire

Hopefully you’ve got a good idea of the field in which you want to gain further experience and training, so the first step is to read through the example internships on this website to get an idea of what an internship is about. These are only a small sample of what is currently available so if you don’t see your ‘perfect internship’ listed then please enquire using the enquiry form and detail your specific requirements. We will carefully read through your application and requirements and send you further information about fees, visa, insurance, process, etc

Step 2 – Application

At this point, it’s a good idea to have a think about how an internship will benefit you, and make sure you are clear about your goals and the experience you would like. Then when you decide to go ahead, request an application form. The application form must be completed and returned with your CV & Cover Letter. We will assess all this information and will probably already have a good idea about which company would offer you the greatest experience. We are ready to answer all of your questions and available for a phone or Skype meeting.

Step 3 – Deposit

Once you have made up your mind that you want to take a big step in your career, then it is time to make an initial deposit. We will send you an invoice with all the details you need. Once the payment has arrived with us, then we will confirm receipt and send you a warm welcoming email.

Step 4 – Interview & Placement

Our experienced internship placement team will personally match your specific learning requirements with a skilled & professional host company from our large company database. A phone or Skype interview with the company will be arranged at a time to suit you. If you are pleased with the host company and if they are happy to accept you then we will arrange an agreement to secure your internship. At this stage, the final placement fee is due.

Step 5 – Final Arrangements

It is now time to apply for the Working Holiday Visa (417 or 462), book your flights, arrange your insurance (which must cover personal liability while you are at the internship) and sort out an accommodation. Don’t get stressed!!! We will assist you with all these things and answer all of your questions along the way.

Step 6 – Arrival

Once you have waved goodbye to your family, friends & pets then sit back and relax….you are on the plane to Australia!!! It is easy to catch a taxi from the airport to your new home but we can arrange an airport transfer if needed. After sleeping off the jetlag, come to our Sydney office to say ‘G’day!’. You will receive a Welcome Package which will assist in making your first few weeks in Sydney a little easier and we can hook you up with a mobile sim-card.

Step 7 – Internship Start

Arrive on the first day with your eyes & ears open ready to learn. The company will give you a comprehensive induction and run through the training plan for the duration of your placement.

Sound good? Then make sure you start now with Step 1, and…
