Going back to New Zealand to work in the tourism industry has always been my goal.

Having been given the opportunity to apply there from my university, I send my CV off almost 300 times directly to New Zealand tourism companies, hostels and hotels, with little or no response. I remembered how important it is in New Zealand to make an personal impression.

From my year “work and travel” over there I knew how vital it was to just “walk in and hand the CV over” compared to sending it by post or email as I did it.

Along the line I found Intern Options and after a few talks with Jon I was convinced they had what it needed to find me a placement in the industry I desired. Having their people in New Zealand who have the contact with companies and can sit down and talk about on my behalf, is an advantage not to underestimate.

When I finally got my offer everything moved very easy and quickly. I got my contract and handbook send via email and was able to return it via email as well and upon arrival a nights accommodation and all the other documents I needed were prepared.

I’ve now been working for almost 2 month in the job and not a day goes by that I haven’t learnt something new. Wellington is great, there are other interns from Intern Options here and all stay at the place I work before finding their own accommodation in Wellington.

Cheers, Luke

Name: Lukas

University: Oxford Brookes University

Course: BSc International Tourism Management

Currently in: Wellington, New Zealand

For how long: 12 months

.

Lukas is from Germany and currently studying at Oxford Brookes in the UK. Lukas was quite specific about what kind of placement he wanted, so it went down to the wire but we made it. Lukas was interested in the backpacking industry and we found Lukas a great placement in one of New Zealand’s top backpackers.

When our students arrive in New Zealand for their hospitality or tourism internships, Intern Options put everyone up for a couple of nights to get you started. The chain of backpakers we use is where Lukas is now working. So Lukas has met our students who have just gone out to Wellington to work in hotels there, Dan, Chris and a few others.

When Lukas was applying it was clear he had a huge passion for New Zealand (being a kiwi myself that was good to see!). So we hope New Zealand has lived up to your expectations, I’m sure it has but I look forward to hearing how it is going Lukas, over to you…

If you would like to see what kind of tourism internships you could do in New Zealand, check out the Tourism Internships page for full details.
