Name: Andrew

University: University of Chester

Course: BA (Hons) in Journalism

Heading to: Sydney, Australia

For how long: 24 weeks

Starting: February 2010

Andrew has gained some journalism experience in the UK working on the local news desk and covering local elections. This will be the first major sports journalism experience Andrew will have on his CV.

When Andrew applied for his sports journalism internship this was what he was after:

The aim of my internship is to craft an understanding and knowledge of the sports journalism industry. While at university I was disappointed at the lack of tasks that involved sports coverage as it becomes an increasingly prominent section of online, newspaper and broadcast journalism.

The company in Sydney we have placed Andrew into is a large Dutch company that has a very established intern programme. The company specialises in sporting statistics for cricket, rugby, Aussie Rules and many more smaller sporting codes.

The company Andrew will be working for is very active in attending Australian sporting events. There may also be opportunities for Andrew to be working as intern reporter at local events.

This year the company has reported from the Women’s Champions Trophy Hockey, the Sydney World Masters Games and the Men’s Champions Trophy in Melbourne. These smaller events are a chance for new the interns like Andrew to get out in the field and for them to get some actual reporting experience.

Most of the internship will be office-based and online trawling for the biography project. We’ve found the biography research project is a good way for interns to fine tune their research skills and understand the newsgathering process.

If you’re interested in a Sports Journalism Internship in Sydney or Melbourne then check out the Sports Journalism Internship description on the PR & Media Internships page for full details and example Internships.

Andrew’s internship will start in February 2010. This will be a great time of the year to start in Sydney with the summer in full swing. With a sporting background Andrew will love the work life balance enjoyed in Australia with easy access to sports and the outdoors.
