Sinead started her Hospitality internship in February 2009 in one of Wellington’s top hotels. The hotel is 5 star and has a top restaurant located in the hotel that is run as a separate business. Sinead needed to complete a six month internship as part of her studies at DIT starting January/ February.

This is a quiet time to find a hospitality placement in New Zealand, with the Christmas/ summer holidays from mid December to Mid January. We find in December & January, most HR teams or hotel managers are away on their summer holiday. That is why we were so pleased that this 5 star hotel contacted us for two students just as they applied!

Sinead is almost on her way back to Ireland from New Zealand, the reports from the hotel are that she did a fantastic job. In fact the hotel has asked Intern Options for another two Irish hospitality students to replace Sinead and Sean. So this speaks volumes for Sinead and the work she did on her hospitality internship in Wellington, New Zealand.

When Sinead gets back to Ireland she will be updating everyone on her time in New Zealand, so keep tuned to the blog for an update!

University: Bournemouth University

Course: BA (Hons) Tourism Management

Kyle applied for a 12 month tourism internship back in April 2009.  When Kyle applied he asked Intern Options to find him a placement in the following area:

I would like the opportunity to work in one of the World’s top tourist destinations, well known for their speciality for outdoor and adventure tourism.

Well Kyle started his placement in July and he certainly is in one of the world’s top tourist destinations – Queenstown!  Queenstown is New Zealand’s adventure tourism capital and some say the adventure capital of the Southern Hemisphere.

Kyle was snapped up by the largest tourism operator in Queenstown and the largest employer in the area.  Set on a mountain overlooking the town of Queenstown you need to get in a gondola to go to work every morning.  Working here you will feel like you are working on top of the world! Some of the attractions offered are bungee jumping, luge carting, extreme swing, paraponting. Over the years we have placed many UK, USA, Canadian and even some Australian students into this operator and all (apart from one, long story…) have loved the tourism placement and Queenstown.

Kyle was joined last month by Jessica, also from Bournemouth University and we will be hearing how Jessica is getting on in Queenstown soon.

Well enough from me, I will pass you over to Kyle to give you an idea of how he is going, what it was like when he first applied and anything else that is on his mind.

University: Newcastle University

Course: (BA Hons) Modern Languages (French and German)

Heading to: Auckland, New Zealand

Hannah originally applied for an Australian Internship in Perth but due to the economy there we had to cancel that programme.  BUT luckily we have found Hannah a fantastic placement in Auckland for her six month hospitality internship.

Although Hannah has not studied hospitality, she has some good experience on her CV already and her French and German languages were a big benefit on her CV.

Hannah will be working at a four star hotel in the heart of Auckland City.  Jon from Intern Options (a kiwi) used to work just across the road from the hotel and often had work conferences and events at the hotel, as they have large conference facilities.

The hotel is a five minute walk from the Auckland viaduct which hosted the Americas cup yachting race for two years and have some of the best restaurants in Auckland as well as ferries that give Hannah access to the hundreds of islands within an hour of Auckland by boat.

I know Hannah is back in the UK now and getting everything ready for her 1st of September start date in Auckland.  We wish her all the best and look forward to hearing how she gets on in her Hospitality Internship.
