For how long: 12 weeks

I just talked to a very excited Leanne who has just completed her phone interview for her Graphic Design internship in Sydney. Leanne is striving to get some valuable graphic design experience on her CV and has chosen Sydney as the place to get this.

Leanne’s looking to get a wide range of design experience and this is where Australian companies will be perfect as they tend to give you experience in all areas of their business.

Again enough from me, I know Leanne has lots to write about and we wish Leanne all the best for her Graphic Design Internship in Australia at the end of August.

Following on from Stuarts successful phone interview for his Film Internship in Sydney, some tips on how to successfully get through your internship phone interview. In fact if you follow these tips it could even be fun, sick I know!

For most of our students and graduates this is the most daunting part of the application process for their internship. But the response I always get after our students have finished their phone interview is “that wasn’t too bad, it was more of a chat on the phone rather than a scary interview”

So some tips already I hear you saying:

1) Remember to smile while you’re speaking so the interviewer will receive a positive impression.

This one is so simple but works so well, body language is over 80% of the way we communicate in a normal face to face interview, so not being able to see the person you are talking to, means you need to rely on voice tone and what you say. Smiling is a simple way of not slipping into a monotone voice while trying to think of what to say.

Also as it’s a telephone interview, again the interviewer will not be able to see if you are nodding your head in approval, so ensure that you are vocal and that you are responsive to everything that the interviewer is asking.

2) Act confident, friendly and well-prepared

Couple of ways you can do this,

firstly stand up when you are talking on the phone, don’t sit down (or slouch!).

This is actually something I learnt when I was on my internship, and it works surprisingly well. Next time you need to make an important phone call try doing it standing up, you’ll feel a lot better than sitting down (bit of psychology in there which I won’t go into).

Secondly have your CV printed off and in front of you while you are doing your interview.

Most employers will refer to your CV/ resume during the interview and if you’re like me you wrote this a loooong time ago and don’t even know what references you put in there.

3) Show that you have a knowledge of their company (RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET)

Sorry didn’t mean to shout there but this is an area where you can really impress the person interviewing you. Stuart did this well and so did Charlotte for her Fashion Internship interview. Today most information you can find on the internet. So use it to the full potential

Look at their website, see what projects they have on, how many staff, look at their press releases if they have them

Google the company to see if anything extra comes up in the news or on Australian websites

Google the person interviewing you, although don’t take this one too far and freak them out! It is good to know what the person interviewing you is responsible for, if it is an events internship and the person interviewing you is in charge of event set up then you can customise your responses to this.

4) Think about your skills and attributes

For many of our students this is their first bit of quality work experience in their career area so trying to think of your skills and attributes for PR or Advertising internships will be pretty hard. Think outside the square a bit her as the person interviewing you knows you will not necessarily have experience but you have the theory behind you to jump into your internship.

Couple of things here:

Think about your strengths, could be you are a people person, good social skills, think of examples where you have used your strengths in a part time job you have had or at university

Employers like to hear that you have weaknesses, try to make the weakness actually come across as a strength, for example my weakness is that I am a perfectionist. Yes this can be a weakness in that you never get that article written, but follow this up with the steps you have taken to make yourself more effective like giving yourself a deadline.

That’s about all, if you think about how you would be an asset to the internship company you will be working for and come across as keen to learn then you will fly through the interview.

If you have applied for an internship through Intern Options then we will walk you through the phone interview in more detail and Jon will be there to talk you through some phone interview tips specific to your employer.

All the best and maybe try closing your eyes and pretending you’re in Australia at one of these locations already, that will make you relax…

Cheers,Jon

Ok so I’m nearly off to Oz and I’m pretty excited! Only decided I was going to do this internship just over a month ago so it’s all been fairly hectic sorting everything out but it’s all done now, phew! Jon has been really helpful and is always on the other end of the phone if you need anything which is great to know. So if anyone is worried about not having enough time to sort everything out, don’t worry, it’ll all get done!

I was a bit nervous about the phone interview but it was all so relaxed and friendly it didn’t really feel like an interview anyway which is always nice! The visa was also sorted out very smoothly, which I was not expecting! I just applied online and within a couple of days it was all sorted so there’s no need to panic about that.

I also managed to quite a cheap flight on lastminute.com so try that site if you’re stuck for options.

Good luck everyone, hope everything goes well for you! xx

Hey Hey!

Ok, Internships… Fun Fun Fun, hard to sort out, yes, run, run for your lives!… Nah they’re easy enough, just takes a bit of planning and thinking out…..

…So, I decided to take up an Internship after being rejected for a few jobs I’d applied for due to ‘lack of experience’. After browsing around the Net, emailing a few people here and there, Jon Carroll got in touch with me. I had originally planned to go sometime Next Year, around February time. However, Jon told me theres a chance I could be there in August, all we ll and good and really exciting until I realised instead of having 9 months to sort out the Internship, I now had around 6 weeks!!!
So, clearly the first hurdle is finding the money to go, As i’m an ex-student and still poor (feel sorry for me!) I decided to take a loan out, which fingers crossed is well and good now so thats the hard part sorted. I found Tesco were best for me but you should still try shopping around.
Next came finding insurance, Age Concern (yes, the place for old people) has worked out the cheapest so far and that gives a hell of a lot of cover (something along the lines of £2.5 million for medical cover!!!) I belive for the 16weeks Ill be in Sydney the insurance was going to cost £320.

Visas, fairly simple, go to the Australian embassy website fill in a form for the appropriate forms, ask Jon to point you in the right direction and Bobs your Mums brother (uncle) the Visa is sorted.

I’ve only briefly looked at Flights but from speaking to friends and family who’ve travelled to Australia, they’ve all recommended Quantas Airlines as the best! So although that will more than likely work out more expensive at least its a trusted airline

So thats just a brief run down of what I’ve done so far, if you’ve got any questions that you think i’ll be able to answer, please feel free to ask! If not, as Jon!

Take care and enjoy, I’m going too
