What are you most looking forward to in Australia?

I’m mostly looking forward to the change of scenery and culture that Australia has to offer; the weather is of course an added bonus. I’m also eager to meet new people throughout my stay and hopefully make some long term friendships.

What do you hope to achieve/ learn on your internship?

During my time on the internship I hope to gain a thorough knowledge of the inner workings of PR in relation to my passions of fashion and media. As I have recently graduated university with an English Literature BA Hons degree, I will be going into this experience as a blank canvas, ready to learn and take in as much knowledge as possible.

What do you think this internship/ placement will add to your CV?

I believe that this internship will add immense appeal to my CV and will be a great first step into seeking my dream job. I will be extremely confident when approaching job interviews as I will acquire all the understanding and experience essential to make an excellent first impression.

Why are you travelling to Australia for your internship?

I am always open to new challenges and what’s more of a challenge than travelling to the other side of the world alone for a work experience? Moreover, my chosen internship of PR in Fashion and Media is perfect and Australia is the only place to offer such an ideal experience. Therefore, the idea of travelling and learning at the same time is exactly what I’ve been looking forward to.

How jealous do you think your friends are going to be?

All of my friends are extremely jealous that I am going but they have promised to visit me during my time living out there, although they are probably using me as an excuse to see some nice weather! I will miss my family greatly but an opportunity such as this does not come around every day and I have to grab it with both hands and make the most of every day.

Kate applied for her Fashion textile intenship when she was travelling around New Zealand. In April Kate will travel to Australia to start her Fashion Textile internship focusing on marketing and PR.

The company we have placed Kate into is a small company with a very well recognised Australian designer. Kate will learn a great deal on her internship.

Some of the things Kate will be doing are:

Public Relations – dealing with magazine editors & stylists.

Selling/ wholesale – dealing with sales agents, boutiques and the process of taking orders and manufacturing them .

Some comments from Kate about why she chose Australia for her Fashion Internship and what she is looking forward to:

I am going to be starting my internship with in May, which I am really looking forward to. During my internship I will be working on PR, marketing and administration tasks and I am going to be based at their office in Sydney!

I travelled to Sydney before as a tourist and loved it so I am really looking forward to working and living in the city for a couple of months, I have also been travelling for the past four months so will be nice to get into a work environment again and learn some new skills.

I have a degree in Printed Textile design. I am doing a fashion internship as I would like to learn more about the industry and gain experience with a fashion designer. I am hoping that the experience will help me to make a decision later in the year as to whether to apply for a masters degree in fashion design or set up my own business selling my designs, or I may end up working for another designer, who knows!

The main thing for me is to learn as much as I can, hopefully have fun whilst I am there and then see what happens.

University: University College London/ London College of Fashion

Heading to: Sydney, Australia

For how long: 20 weeks

Unfortunately we could not convince this graduate to write about her Sydney Fashion Internship, but it is such a good position that we have found her that we decided to let all you budding retail fashion students/ graduates know about the internship. We will keep her name out of the article to respect her wishes.

She Applied in September to start her Fashion Retail internship in Sydney, Australia in October/ November. She has studied at London College of Fashion and then at University College London.

So what was she looking to get out of this fashion retail internship in Sydney? She has a good CV, with experience in fashion design combined with some very good university work. She is looking to get some better fashion retail experience on her CV and when she applied said:

“I have an intense passion for Fashion and I am determined to pursue a career in Fashion Retail”

The placement we have lined up for her will definitely give her this experience. A Sydney based design company that started in 2003 and has taken the Australian fashion scene by storm after their launch at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week which saw them attract celebrity fans including Rose Byrne, Jennifer Hawkins, Miranda Kerr and Nicky Hilton.

She has a phone interview next week to speak with the Sydney based fashion design company. This is an opportunity for her to talk through what kind of work she would like to and what experience she would like to get on her CV.

From there Intern Options will put the internship details into a formal contract for her, which the employer has signed and we will then help her through the visa application, looking at accommodation, flights, insurance and set her up an Australian bank account.

University: Manchester Metropolitan University

Course: BA (Hons) Fashion

Currently in: Sydney, Australia

For how long: 20 weeks

Louisa is a graduate from MMU and is looking to move into fashion marketing and has applied for an internship  in either Sydney or Melbourne in this area. Louisa has been looking for a graduate job since she graduated but has found this very tough with no marketing experience on her CV. Although Louisa has not studied marketing exactly she will get experience in this area while on an internship Sydney or Melbourne.

Louisa has had some experience in the UK while studying, this has been mainly in fashion design. The goal is to place Louisa into a small to medium sized fashion company where she can get a good grounding in how the business runs and work on the company marketing of their products.

Louisa has agreed to keep us up to date weekly on her internship (thanks again Louisa!) search which began at the beginning of September with Intern Options. The Sydney office is currently talking with the contacts they have in Sydney and Melbourne about a position for Louisa and I understand they are getting pretty close!

So I will hand you over to Louisa to fill you in on all the details from applying to getting her offer (hopefully soon) through to moving to Sydney/ Melbourne and keeping you up-to-date on how her fashion marketing internship is going.

So I’m working for a company who deals with PR, mainly within the fashion sector so have numerous clients ranging from Jewellery to Clothes to Handbags and accessories companies!! I am so very much in my element… and am enjoying learning the insights to fashion PR. It even comes with perks (like getting invited to many parties, club openings and special club offers etc).

I have so far been to a fashion show which one of our clients sponsored, and have a few more events in the pipeline. The people who I work with are so nice and I have met many people since being here and have loved exploring Sydney!!!

The weekly social catch ups that Intern Options organise for all the interns in Sydney are a great way to meet new people. The beaches are beautiful, the summer is on its way… what more can you ask for??? … anyway I best go but will blog soon.

O.K. so I have pretty much everything ticked off my checklist to go I am extremely excited about starting my placement in fashion events and its not long now until I leave for Oz!!!

Jon has been great about helping us sort everything out as I was struggling to find a placement myself and my University suggested Intern Options as I was pretty persistent that I wanted to go to either Australia or US and contacting companies was fine but getting a response from them was like drawing blood from a stone and this is where Jon came in handy,  but to be honest the majority thereafter has been pretty straightforward.

I got a great deal on a flight, I advise not to rush into booking a flight and shop around I actually went to a travel agent and got a BARGAIN!!!! I got my Insurance through my University, which was also very reasonable and covers literally everything!!

I’ll keep you updated but the next time I blog I will probably be in Sydney… wish me luck …Good luck to you all!!!

Course: BSc Tourism & Business Management

Charlotte is currently studying and this six month placement will make up her course requirement.  Charlotte had the choice of a 12 month paid placement or a six month unpaid internship.  She chose the six month unpaid internship with Intern Options and she will hopefully tell you all why.

We have already placed Charlotte into a really good placement in Darlinghurst, Sydney which is a good area to be working.  The company we have placed Charlotte in we have had interns in before so we know it will be good and we have their company and position description up on our under our Fashion PR Internship page.
