There are certain internship areas that we can’t place you into in Australia or New Zealand for. These are either due to the current economic climate or registration issues, oversupply of Australian applicants or certain industries that don’t really understand internships. Some of these areas will change in the next year as the economy pics up as many revolve around the property and building sectors.

Temporarily Unavailable Internships

Architecture Internships - We made the decision in May 2009 not to take any applications for architecture for Australia or New Zealand until the market picks up down there. We are currently unable to place students or graduates into unpaid architecture placements due to the lack of work with the downturn in the building/ construction industry.

Interior Design – Due to the slow down in the Australian building industry we have also put interior design internship applications on hold for 2009. We see this picking up in the middle of 2010.

Environmental Internships – at the moment we can’t place students or graduates into environmental internships in Australia or New Zealand. We are expecting to have this programme up and running again mid 2010.

Permanently can’t do these Internship Areas

Banking Internships – The banking industry in Australia is not as big as the UK or USA. All of the Australian banks have very comprehensive recruitment programmes with Australian universities. So this is not an area Intern Options can place into. We can place into companies that work with the banking industry in finance or accounting.

Criminology Internships – We cannot place into this area as most of the placements available are through the Australian police force and they will not allow international applicants.

Engineering Internships – This is just a sector that does not really get internships. We have tried extensively to place engineering students or graduates into Australia with little luck. The feedback has been that they will not hire an engineering graduate without meeting them first.

One option that many of our Engineering applicants take is to do the paid Australian horticulture jobs programme for three months and then find a position by themselves, this approach has had some success for many of our graduates.

Product Design Internships – We have also had little luck placing students or graduates into product design internships. The main reason we have had from Australian employers is that they don’t want a student or graduate taking their design secrets back to Europe/ America after they have worked for 4-6 months with them.

Nursing Internships - Due to registration issues with unregistered nurses we cannot provide internships for unqualified nurses. We can’t also place graduate nurses into Australia or New Zealand as you would need to qualify in Australia before you could apply for a job, so we would not be able to do this from the UK.
